Once known as mystery swine disease, new swine disease, porcine epidemic abortion and respiratory syndrome, blue ear disease and swine plague, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) has been classified as type-II infectious disease in China. Characteristics of swine blue ear disease include high contagiousness, endemicity and great differences in incubation periods. PRRS incubation periods among the attacked susceptible swinery last for 3 days at least, and 37 days at the maximum.
Swine diseases are in a great variety and great complexity. Roughly, they can be divided into viral diseases, bacteriosis, parasitic diseases and nutritional and metabolic diseases, etc. In addition, viral diseases that impair swine production include porcine circovirus and porcine parvovirus. In terms of bacteriosis, it involves escherichia coli and actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae.
